Originally released in 1973, *Campo di Marte* is one of the hidden gems of Italian progressive rock. Though they produced only a single album, it was enough to secure the Florentine band a place in the cult canon of the more obscure and sought-after corners of the genre.

Far removed from the mainstream popularity enjoyed by bands like Premiata Forneria Marconi or Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Campo di Marte developed a distinctive style that blended hard rock, symphonic progressive, psychedelia, and folk. Divided into seven movements—titled “Primo Tempo” through “Settimo Tempo”—the record alternates between powerful riffs, dark atmospheres, and acoustic passages defined by the flute, Hammond organ, and piano.

Led by guitarist Enrico Rosa, the band evokes the raw power of Il Rovescio della Medaglia, the tension of Il Balletto di Bronzo, and the kind of orchestral refinement later embraced by Maxophone. Among the most memorable tracks are “Terzo Tempo”—the album’s true creative peak—the acoustic folk-inflected “Quinto Tempo,” and the monumental “Settimo Tempo,” which revisits the record’s core themes in a high-impact finale. The lyrics grapple with the absurdity of war and human violence, while the iconic cover art, featuring ancient Turkish mercenaries, has become one of the most recognizable symbols of 1970s Italian progressive rock.

Dark, elegant, and deeply atmospheric, *Campo di Marte* remains an essential album for any fan of Italian progressive rock to this day.
