Orchestra SMS is essentially an educational project, created between 2014 and 2015.
But instead of playing Pirates of the Caribbean, Cinderella or Einaudi, we jam to The Velvet Underground, Robert Wyatt, Third Ear Band, Lucio Battisti with Pasquale Panella, and many more.
I have been arranging uncomfortable tunes for several years, for whoever happens to be in range. We haven’t had 3 electric basses, 4 keyboards and a violin yet, but it could still happen (we’ve done 3 flutes).
To be a part of SMS, you certainly need to be willing to sing, though it doesn’t matter if you’re good or not, you learn on the ground. This is how our instrumental-vocal ensemble was born, varying from 10 to 15 elements depending on who enters or escapes.
We play everything that is slightly more difficult than what we know how to do. That makes the goal neither too near nor too far.
The sum of the goals leads to an unpredictable repertoire for an unlikely ensemble: 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, 1 violin, electric guitar, classical guitars and banjo, piano, harpsichord, keyboard, harp, bass, drums, percussion, at least 8 voices, toy pianos, Jew’s harp, kazoos, water bottles with straws, mobile phones.
We don’t play much on the road, we can’t afford the bureaucracy of organising concerts, but the Sinfonia School of Music, our home and birthplace, hosts us and gives us a great auditorium where audiences gladly come to hear us.
Musica Sparpagliata is the culmination of 10 years of activity, with several line-up changes, consolidation of the group’s core, a path of growth together. Like a family.
We hope you enjoy listening.
