From the title, Vincenzo Ramaglia suggests the paradoxical synthesis of the two seemingly incompatible souls of his third album (just imagine a tuxedo, the formal evening suit par excellence used as an alternative to the frac by the conductors, in an improbable PVC version , material that - like the latex - usually finds its own textile use in transgressive and fetish attires, not too suited to a concert hall).
"PVC smoking" is an IDM score for cello, bass clarinet, electric bass and electronic base, with sax improvisations and live electronics. It can be defined as a sort of "room IDM" (or "contemporary dance music" if you prefer), which combines electronics (on the footsteps of Aphex Twin, Squarepusher and Autechre), acoustic instruments (cello, bass clarinet and saxophone in their use more experimental and unconventional, in the footsteps of Iannis Xenakis, Salvatore Sciarrino, Jonathan Harvey, Stefano Scodanibbio, Helmut Lachenmann, Giacinto Scelsi and John Cage), fretless electric bass (explored through arduous and virtuous techniques, like the polyphonies between harmonics and notes real, recorded in the studio strictly in a single take, without the aid of editing). All scrupulously noted - probably for the first time in dance - in a score, like an orchestral work, but without the exclusion of spaces reserved for improvisation.
According to the critics, "moving with courage always along the perilous boundaries between improvised and cultured contemporary music, light years of irritating diatonicism and new age empty, the young Roman composer distills a new masterpiece" (Massimo Marchini, Rockerilla), through "a schizophrenia that can probably also become a new synergy of listening "(Michele Coralli, Blow Up).
